A New Map of Africa 1630

By Willem Janszoon Blaeu (1571-1638), Amsterdam

This is a contemporary, hand coloured copperplate engraving. Featured are a decorative border with vignettes of people in national costume and views of African cities. The decorative cartouche is surmounted with a lion and flowing mane. In the ocean can be seen nine sailing ships, sea monsters; flying fish; whales and a sea horse. All ships are flying Dutch ensigns.
